We recommend planting your trees in clusters to form small copses and pockets of shelter so they establish more successfully and deliver greater benefits for wildlife.
MOREwoods trial packs
Thinking about planting trees but not sure where to start? Our free trial packs of 50 trees give you the chance to try new ideas on your land.
Am I eligible?
Our trial packs are for Great Britain only, unfortunately we're unable to supply them in Northern Ireland. To make sure the trees establish well, we ask that you own the land or have tenancy for at least the next 10 years.
Why should I apply?
Designed for first-time planters as well as those testing new ideas, our free MOREwoods trial packs make it easy to get started. Whether you’re adding trees to field corners, planting along rivers, or creating new habitats on less productive land, these packs are a simple, low-commitment way to boost biodiversity and resilience, no matter your land type or location.
When will I get the trees?
We’re now accepting applications for planting trees between November 2026 and March 2027. We’ll let you know within eight weeks if your application is successful.
What’s in the packs?
Each pack contains 50 trees and you can apply for up to three packs. The six pack types are:
- Wild wood pack – Tough trees for exposed hills and moors, offering shelter, protection from extreme weather, and nitrogen capture.
- Harvest pack – Biodiversity-friendly species suitable for upland areas, with harvest-friendly species.
- Wet woods pack – Trees suited to wet flushes, slopes, and streams, supporting nitrogen capture and carbon sink.
- Resilience pack – Ideal for wilder, woodier landscapes on poor lowland soils.
- Broadleaf pack – A rich mix of trees with fruit, flowers, and foliage for fertile ground.
- Wet roots pack – Native trees that thrive in flood-prone or waterlogged lowland areas.
Pack contents are subject to availability and germination rates, so we can’t provide species details before delivery or customise packs. All the trees we supply are sourced and grown in the UK and Ireland.
All packs include tree protection. Where deer are present, we recommend choosing tubes and stakes when you apply. In areas without deer, spirals and canes will help protect young trees from harsh weather and small mammals.
Are these packs right for my land?
Before applying, check your site doesn’t have any special designations, like Site of Special Scientific Interest, Area of Archaeological Interest, or County Wildlife Site, and avoid planting high-value habitats like species-rich grassland, wetlands or peatlands.
When choosing your packs, consider your soil type, drainage and local climate. Use MAGIC Maps or contact our team, Natural England or your local authority if you are unsure.
Avoid planting too close to neighbouring properties or on land committed to other schemes unless approved.
Trees must be planted on land you own or lease. They should not be sold or left unplanted.
Planting trees through this scheme may affect eligibility for direct agricultural land payments, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), and some other grants. We recommend seeking advice before applying if this is a concern.
