Trees and plants at Gorse Covert Mounds

The site has 25 species of tree and shrub. These include silver birch and pedunculate oak, with the occasional cherry, field maple, white poplar and hazel.

Typical waterside trees such as grey willow and alder can be found around the ponds. An area of one of the ponds is full of the otherwise nationally rare water-soldier, a British native floating pond plant with spiked, jagged edged foliage in brown/olive green.

Over 60 species of wildflower have been recorded here, including three species of orchid. The most abundant species include herb robert, tufted vetch, red campion, birdsfoot trefoil, with yellow flag iris and meadowsweet near the ponds. Small areas of bluebell have been introduced by volunteers.
