Saving and protecting rare wildlife

Support from members means we can continue defending woods under threat, like Oldhouse Warren in West Sussex, which is home to rare purple emperor butterflies. We helped save the site from a holiday park development that would have destroyed 300 football pitches-worth of irreplaceable ancient woodland.

Nurturing damaged woods back to life

In Scotland, members have helped us turn Glen Finglas from an overgrazed hill farm to a flourishing wildlife haven. By nurturing the ancient woodland, restoring the peatland and introducing grazing cattle, our team on the ground has encouraged beavers and rare butterflies to return, black grouse to thrive and interesting plants to prosper.

Making sure the woods are here when you need them

We look after more than 1,000 woods across the UK and our members help us keep them all open and free to explore. We've given Mourne Park in Northern Ireland a new lease of life – opening it up to the public for the first time and adding three circular walking trails that wind through the trees and along the peaceful river.

Every member receives:

  • a welcome pack with membership card, directory of over 1,000 UK woods to explore, and a native tree ID guide to take on your woodland adventures
  • three copies of our exclusive members’ magazine Broadleaf a year, each issue packed full of fascinating news, pictures and features on woods, trees and wildlife.

Family members also receive:

  • a Nature Detectives membership pack bursting with wildlife activities, stickers, posters and more
  • seasonal activity packs four times a year, filled with fun things to do outdoors, nature crafts, puzzles and competitions.

Life members also receive:

  • a life member pin badge.
