Giving red squirrels more room to leap

Disease, habitat loss and competition for food now mean that red squirrels are endangered in England and Wales, and near threatened in Scotland. But we're coming to their rescue. As well as reintroducing red squirrels to Ledmore & Migdale woods in the Scottish Highlands, we're working to extend and protect an existing red squirrel reserve at Snaizeholme in the Yorkshire Dales. And our members can help us do even more

Helping otters live their best life

Otters were on the brink of extinction in the 1950s due to hunting, habitat destruction and river pollution, but after new regulations in the 1980s afforded them legal protection and improved water quality, they made a comeback worthy of the silver screen. Today, they still face threats from persecution, pollution and traffic accidents, but with help from our members, we’re making them right at home in woods including Killaloo Wood in Northern Ireland, and Bovey Valley Woods, a breath-taking temperate rainforest in Devon. We allow scrubby thickets to grow along riverbanks – the perfect cover – protect and create river woods and help to keep watercourses healthy and full of their favourite food.
