Numerous blocks of young planted trees and self-sown scrub forming parts of a local nature reserve, which also inclused open grassland, coal bings and wetland. The planted trees include oak, alder, birch, ash, gean, hazel, larch, Scots pine, Corsican pine, white willow, black poplar and whtie poplar. Self-sown scrub includes broom, alder, hawthorn, willows and occasional sycamore. There is an extensive network of surfaced paths on the nature reserve. Most of these paths cross open space or run around the edges of woodland blocks but some path sections pass through woodland. Access via Merkland Drive - OSGR: NS 672740
