Ancient woodland sites such as this are rare in Lancashire and provide an important wildlife haven. The woodland has a good display of ancient woodland flora such as bluebell in the late spring and the River Calder glides past on the north western boundary of the site adding to the scenic appeal of this woodland. Younger and older broadleaf trees happily co-exist. The woodland is home to a good range of birds and mammals and visitors often get a fleeting glimpse of roe deer. Good public access and a circular walk.
