A popular local open space, Freemantle Common is an informal area of common land surrounded by mixed woodland. It is managed for wildlife; several less common bird species can be seen, such as treecreeper, nuthatch and coal tit and the bunds surrounding the common come alive with wildflowers during the spring and summer. This colourful display provides important food plants for pollinators and other creatures.

The Common provides amenity open space for informal play and ball games and there is a fenced children’s play area.

Freemantle Common is the site of the buried Roman road to Chichester and this is marked by a plaque at the junction of Peartree Avenue and Spring Road.
