A tree may be a village’s oldest inhabitant, a founding figure in a region’s identity, a natural monument in the nation’s story. From the first tree you ever climbed, to the largest, gnarliest tree you ever saw – they all have a story to tell. Our national contest celebrates the trees across the UK with the most special stories.
Nominations are now open – could your tree take the Tree of the Year crown?
Thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, up to £1000 in tree care awards are available to the most successful or deserving trees in the competition to be properly cared for and valued, for generations to come.
Nominations are open to any tree in the UK with a story to tell. Any individual, group or organisation can nominate a tree until noon on 19 July. The winning trees from previous years are excluded. You can view the previous winners by scrolling through the image gallery at the top of this page. (Note, there was no entry from Northern Ireland in 2014.)
An independent panel of experts in each of the four countries will choose a shortlist from the entries submitted and the winners will then be decided by public vote later in the year.
Our tree care awards are intended to help protect, support and celebrate a healthy future for your special tree. They can be used to cover the cost of necessary management or to help prescribe a more prosperous life for a tree through:
• Tree work such as pruning, fencing, haloing, mulching for root protection and/or removal or management of competing vegetation
• Providing interpretive or educational materials, signage or digital information that helps to build support for your tree
• Tree surveys or professional management advice
• Enabling community engagement activities to help support and protect their tree.
