Trees and peat in the nature and climate crises - the Woodland Trust's view

This position statement sets out the Trust’s stance on the role of trees and peat in the nature and climate crisis.

We outline the forestry guidelines to protect the UK's peatlands, and the steps we are taking to ensure we protect and restore these vital carbon stores and wildlife habitats for the future. It shows how our work aims to halt further degradation of peatlands by addressing past practices like large-scale forestry and prioritising restoring damaged peatland areas, both open and wooded for climate benefits and nature recovery.
