This issue of Wood Wise discusses the importance of natural regeneration for expanding tree and woodland cover in the UK. Natural regeneration – where trees grow from naturally dispersed seeds – can complement tree planting to create natural and carbon-rich landscapes of the future.
There are many benefits of natural regeneration, but also challenges – not least that funding and policy support is lacking.

Plant trees
The UK needs more trees. We plant millions of native trees every year, but planting is just one way to help the UK's woodlands expand. Allowing nature to take its course is also an effective and efficient method of getting more trees in the ground.
About us
We've announced a bold new pledge in the war on waste: no more single-use plastic tree guards on our land from the end of 2021. The commitment puts us at the forefront of the movement to eradicate plastic from planting schemes UK-wide, and we are funding research to find viable alternatives.
