The Lower Derwent Valley supports a rich variety of plants and wildlife due to it comprising of a series of pastures, flood meadows and woodland. The site supports a breeding and wintering bird population of more than 80 species which has lead to the reserve being declared a Special Protection Area. The area also hosts a varied population of mammals from bats and hares to voles which are regularly seen.
