An ancient coppice woodland owned and managed by Essex County Council. A knight was given the wood in the 12th century and in his memory there is an imposing wooden statue carved from a tree stump. Small-leaved lime, once widespread across lowland England but now restricted to just a few woods, is the dominant tree. There are several damp areas full of sedges and a scattering of ponds and streams.
