This wood follows the meanderings of the River Derwent and is accessed from Great Clifton along a very muddy and rutted track. It is a narrow strip of shrubby woodland, much of it on a steep bank with good views along the valley in each direction. At the west end are "Giants Steps", remains of a bronze age terraced cultivated area, and elsewhere you will find the adit to an old tin mine and remains of the Cockermouth Keswick and Penrith railway.
