Part of Angus Millennium Forest for Scotland, this major project is Angus Council's largest and enduring celebration of the new millennium. The 54 new woodlands, covering 92 hectares, are a mixture of existing and newly planted/restored woodland. Around 189,000 trees including oak, hazel, willow, birch, rowan, aspen, ash and gean have been planted to provide a varied wildlife habitat. The woodlands are complemented by existing and recently created semi-natural habitats such as hedges, wildflower meadows, riverbanks, burns and disused railway lines, creating valuable wildlife corridors into urban area. These woodlands are located on the site for the first operational military airfield in Britain (1913) they are now used as playing fields. The Woodlands act as shelter and wind breaks for sports people and model flying club. The more open scrubland areas are noted as a rare lizard habitat. The Scottish coastal cycle network runs through this site.
