This area was designated as a Forest Park in 1972 because of its great walking potential. From early monastic estates, the landscape developed into a farming area and later a coal mining valley. The last mine closed in 1970, and from this land of scattered farmsteads, ancient woodlands, viaducts, disused railways and mined land, have sprung the forests and woodlands of the Afan Valley. Waymarked trails on foot or bike offer many opportunities to view the valleys, hillsides and wonderful views.
