This wood is renowned for its outstanding invertebrate and breeding woodland bird populations. Seventeen species of butterfly have been recently recorded including white admirals and silver washed fritillary which are often seen in summer months; 92 species of moths and up to 24 species of birds. A stream flows south through the mainly flat site towards a small damp gill valley at the southern end of the site.
