The importance of ancient woodland is recognised in national planning policies across the UK and planning authorities and inspectors increasingly act to prevent its direct destruction. However, the threats posed to ancient woods by nearby development are not so widely appreciated.

The aim of this review is to synthesise existing literature on the direct, indirect and cumulative effects of development on nearby woodland, and to relate these effects to ancient woodland in the UK.
