Anston Stones wood supports a variety of habitats, including woodland, the majority of which is also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), calcareous grassland, scrub and wetland. The woodland is the second best example of limestone woodland in South Yorkshire. The limestone grassland within the LNR are also of botanical importance . . There is also a Geological Trail with good examples of limestone gorges, supporting a variety of rare plants and animals. Dead Man's cave is reached via the walkway to the gorge, this cave excavated in the 1960's revealed ancient flint tools from the ice age and animal bones from animals such reindeer and hyena
