State of the UK’s Woods and Trees 2025 document cover

The State of the UK’s Woods and Trees 2025 report puts woodlands back under the microscope to check on their health and see what's changed since our first report.

The latest report warns that while canopy cover is slowly increasing, UK woodlands are in no fit state to withstand an escalating range of threats or fulfil its vital role in mitigating the climate and nature crises. But there is hope – with the right help and support we can still bring our woods back from the brink.

The report covers:

  • woodland condition and cover
  • benefits to people and biodiversity
  • the threats woods and trees face
  • solutions
  • recommended policy actions.

The report draws on multiple sources, including official statistics, published and unpublished reports, academic research, outputs from citizen science projects and trends data from regularly updated datasets held by governments and non-governmental organisations. We are hugely grateful to them all for sharing their data and time to enable us to present these significant results here.
