With the upcoming Sustainable Farming Scheme, farming in Wales is entering a new chapter. Policies, priorities and the way land is supported is shifting, and for many this brings uncertainty as well as opportunity.

If you’re a farmer or landowner in Wales, we understand these are complex times. You may be weighing up difficult decisions about the future of your land, your business and your legacy.

At Coed Cadw – the Woodland Trust in Wales – we don't pretend to have all the answers but what we can promise is practical, grounded support to help you think about your future farming practice, shaped by a real understanding of farming in Wales.

Growing with trees

Many farmers and landowners in Wales have long recognised the value of trees and hedgerows, whether for livestock shelter and shade, nutritional browse for dietary supplement, boundary marking and biosecurity or for improving soils and supporting nature.

Now, as the farming landscape evolves, these historic tree landscape features will play an even greater role in helping farms by:

  • building resilience to changing weather patterns, extreme weather events and unseasonal conditions
  • improving animal welfare and the quality of grazing conditions
  • protecting and enhancing soils, watercourses and biodiversity
  • aligning with emerging funding and changing policy opportunities.

We want to help secure working farms in Wales for generations to come. Across Wales, farmers and landowners are already working with us to integrate trees in ways that complement their farm businesses, boosting their resilience financially and culturally.

You’ve got to trust the people you work with. That’s why the Woodland Trust have been a great partner.
