Our woods are beautiful havens for wildlife and people, often holding many happy memories of loved ones who have passed on. It’s only natural that family and friends like to scatter ashes in a meaningful location they can visit whenever they choose.

We appreciate being contacted for permission. There are very important environmental concerns to consider when scattering ashes in woodland and, unfortunately, not all of
our woods are suitable.

Where can ashes be scattered?

As the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity, we look after many precious ancient woodlands that are home to rare and vulnerable species. Ashes can change the chemistry of the soil and damage these fragile and complex ecosystems. As we hope you appreciate, this means we cannot permit ash scattering in ancient woodland or other sensitive habitats.

We have many lovely woods which are not classed as ancient or sensitive where we’re happy for ashes to be scattered carefully. Please just contact us before you do and let us help you find the right woodland for you.

How do I choose a wood?

We can help you find a beautiful and appropriate location to scatter ashes and remember your loved one in a way which won’t cause damage to the environment or put our ancient woods in jeopardy.

Please contact us with the region or even the name of the wood you are considering. We will consult our estates team and come back to you with their recommendation and information about how to scatter ashes.

Is there a fee for scattering ashes in our woods?

We don’t charge for scattering ashes, although as a charity we would be very grateful for any donations towards our vital work conserving woods and trees across the UK.

You may wish to consider leaving a gift in your will which won’t cost you a penny now but will make a real difference in the future, helping us to protect trees, restore woods and create havens for wildlife.

If you'd like to make a donation in memory of your loved one or speak to somebody about leaving a gift in your will, please get in touch with our team on 0330 333 3300 or legacies@woodlandtrust.org.uk.
