Ynys-hir mixes Welsh oak woodland with wet grassland and salt marshes. In the spring, the ground is carpeted in flowers, and birdsong fills the air. Flycatchers and redstarts emerging from the nestboxes, installed by the site owners, the RSPB. Summer brings wading birds, such as lapwings and redshanks. Visitors may see woodland breeding birds including pied flycatchers, redstarts and wood warblers and birds of prey such as peregrines and red kites. Among the wild flowers are woodland species such as bluebells and species associated with peat bogs such as sundews, bog asphodel and bog-rosemary.
