Ancient woodland restoration project

Help us give ancient woodland a future.

Rare, fragile and irreplaceable. Our precious ancient woods have been around for centuries - long enough to develop into rich and complex ecosystems.

Ancient woodland is home to some of our most beautiful wildlife, such as bluebells, wood anemone and rare fungi. These woods are living history books and the backbone of many myths and legends. But they are under threat.

Time is running out

Ancient woodland now covers only around 2% of the UK and much of what remains has been damaged by planting with non-native conifers or colonisation by invasive species - such as rhododendron.

We are at the forefront of ancient woodland restoration and have been championing a new approach to this vital work. By gradually removing conifers from these plantations and allowing light to penetrate the woodland canopy, we are encouraging the former native woodland species and habitats to recover and re-colonise the woods.

Thanks to an incredible £1.9 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, over the last four years our experts have been working hard in 10 of the largest concentrations of Plantation on Ancient Woodland. By the end of 2017, we will have helped bring over 10,000 hectares of ancient woodland into restoration.

Our vision is to breathe life back into all of the UK’s damaged and threatened ancient woodland ecosystems so that they will once again become valued by people, a refuge for wildlife and a part of resilient landscapes fit for the 21st century and beyond.

We have a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rescue these remaining fragments of our natural heritage.

The UK’s ancient woods urgently need your help

Support us in the next phase of restoring ancient woodland across the UK and help revive these vital and irreplaceable habitats before they are lost forever. There may be ancient woods close to you that are in urgent need of our help too!

It will cost us £7 million to deliver our ancient woodland restoration work over the next 4 years.

We’ve secured £3 million so far but need your help to secure the remaining £1 million a year.
