Woods are not just about trees, Wood Wise takes a look at the importance of open spaces in woodland...

The open spaces are important too. A healthy natural wood can be a mosaic of areas with varying tree canopy cover, structure and species, interspersed with watercourses, glades and temporary clearings. Open spaces support light specialist species that more shaded areas cannot, and could include heathland or wildflower meadows. They also appeal to people out enjoying woods. The spring 2012 issue of Wood Wise has case studies looking at open space importance, maintenance, restoration and creation.
