Thought to date back to the prehistoric period, Heartwood Forest has a rich history.

Heartwood boasts features such as depressions, potential old tracks and internal banks which, together with significant buried remains, suggests human activity from the prehistoric period onwards.

The Woodland Trust acquired the 347 hectares (850 acres) site of arable farmland on 30 September 2008, almost all of which was being farmed commercially with arable crops such as wheat and oilseed rape.
