Enjoy family fun outdoors this summer and join us for a free tree and wildlife activity trail with Woodland Trust staff, volunteers and partners to show you the secrets of woodlands in summer in the Faughan Valley.

This trail will guide families and children of all ages around Burntollet Wood, exploring the world of trees and woodland wildlife.

This event is delivered as part of the National Lottery Heritage funded Faughan Valley Ancient Woodlands: From Fragments to Thriving Forest project.

Don't forget

Please dress appropriately for the weather and walking in the woods.

Long trousers are advised. Please bring a hat and sun-cream or rainwear as necessary.

Please bring your own hand sanitiser and adhere to COVID social distancing guidelines.

Refreshments will not be available to buy during the event so please bring your own. There are picnic tables/grassy areas perfect for picnicking.

Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

When and where

  • Date: Saturday 31 July, 10am-4pm.
  • Price: Free, but donations to support the management of our woodlands are welcome.
  • Location: Burntollet Wood is a 24-hectare (59-acre) wood next to Ness County Country Park in the Faughan Valley. It is around 11km (7 miles) south-east of Derry/Londonderry and almost 5km (3 miles) north-west of the village of Claudy. There are several entrances to Burntollet Wood via kissing gates including four along Ervey Road. The main entrance is from the Ervey car park. Detailed directions will be sent out with the confirmation email.
  • Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome. They must be on leads at all times.
  • Access: The event is not wheel chair accessible. It is accessible for off-roader prams. There are no toilets onsite but there are toilets at the nearby Ness Country Park main car park.
  • Parking: There is a car park at the wood with 40-60 spaces.

Please include in your email:

  • your first name and surname
  • number of tickets needed
  • the ages of those attending
  • your preferred time slot - either 10am, 11am, 12pm or 1.30pm
  • a mobile phone number and name for each person you are booking for. This is required for NHS Test and Trace purposes.

Please arrive at the stipulated meeting point 15 minutes before departure. Please be patient, adhere to social distancing guidelines and maintain a 2-metre distance from other people/groups. It is worth downloading the free Big Butterfly Count app prior to the event, as this will help when on the trail.
