Woodland Trust Scotland is extending its Butterdean Wood in East Lothian thanks to generous support from the Bank of Scotland. Two open fields have been acquired which will add 8.7ha to the existing 42.15ha. Join us to help plant these fields with native trees to expand our wood and help fight climate change.

Don't forget

Remember to wrap up warm and prepare for all weather as we can’t promise sunshine. Please wear stout footwear or wellies that you don’t mind getting muddy.

Please bring gloves and a spade if you have them.

When and where

  • Date: Saturday 30 October, 10.00am - 1.30pm.
  • Price: Free, but donations to support the management of our woodlands are welcome.
  • Location: Butterdean Wood, Unnamed Road, Tranent, EH33 1EE. When approaching from the A199 follow black and white lorry signs rather than taking the earlier right-hand turn signed Butterdean Wood, this will avoid a narrow single track with blind bends.
  • Dogs: Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept under control at all times.
  • Access: The path to the planting area is generally good with occasional uneven areas.
  • Parking: Is limited to leave this available to other visitors, please park at Alba Tree Nursery, Lower, Winton Way, Tranent, EH33 2AL. A parking area will be designated and Woodland Trust staff will direct you towards the planting which is a short walk through the wood to the planting area.
