London is celebrating its first ever National Park City Week from 21-29 July. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the amazing greenspaces that London has to offer and stand up for woods and trees. It will also be a chance to help make London greener. We’ve pulled together some top tips on how you can get involved.
What is National Park City Week?
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has committed to London becoming the first National Park City in 2019. This will showcase the amazing and crucial contribution that greenspaces make to London – from the iconic Hyde Park and the thousands of plane trees that London prides itself on, to the small pockets of green in London’s many squares and the ancient oaks that have been around for hundreds of years.
The aim of hosting a celebratory week this year is to enhance the natural environment by encouraging more people to pledge to make London even greener. This will help London to become a National Park City in 2019.
How can you get involved?
There will be lots of events happening all over London to celebrate the city’s trees and greenspace. The week kicks off with a free fair on 21 July, hosted by the National Park City Foundation. This fair will showcase volunteering opportunities and experiences across London to show how everyone can get involved in making it greener. We’ll be there amongst many others so do come and say hello.
We’re also running four mindfulness in nature events over the course of the week to explore ways to take a mindful approach in our day to day living. You can take a look and sign up here if you’re interested. There will be lots of other events across the week too so do take a look at the Greater London Authority website here as events get added.
If you want to get more involved you could run your own celebration during the week to showcase the trees on your street. You can sign up to our street trees project where you’ll receive a kit of resources to help you run an event with your neighbours to show your local trees some love.
Inspired to make your part of London even greener? You could plant a tree in your garden or community. There are lots of native trees to choose from on our online shop.
Make the most of a week of celebrations and show your support for woods and trees in London.
