The wood has formed on the clints and grikes of limestone pavement which dates back to glacial times. Large boulders are scattered throughout the wood - remnants of the glacial passage of ice. Hyning Scout lies within the Arnside & Silverdale Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is also designated as a Biological Heritage Site.
