Just a couple of miles to the north of Beaumaris lies the delightful Aberlleiniog woodland,complete with its own Norman castle at its heart. The woodlands, a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI), has a comprehensive network of footpaths and boardwalks, with a varied habitat of ancient semi-natural broadleaved woodland, young broadleaved plantation woodland, flower- rich grassland, wet meadow and scrub. The slopes below the castle hold some lovely old oak trees, and there is a beautiful display of wild flowers in the spring, The reserve supports many different species of woodland birds, such as wood warbler, nuthatch, tree creeper, bullfinch, jay, buzzards, kestrel and woodpecker. Other species include bats, red squirrels, otters, stoat, weasel and water shrew.
