Occupying a commanding position over the river Irwell and the site of the old Racecourse, the woodlands are quite a revelation, given the proximity of the busy A56. The area is rich in wildlife; Tawny Owls and Great Spotted Woodpeckers breed here, and good paths can be followed down to the river, with Ash, Black Poplar, Silver Birch and Willow amongst the variety of broad leaved trees. The active 'Friends Of' group should be commended for helping to keep this one of Manchester's special places.
