Ancient trees often have a special and unique appearance (Photo: WTML)

Ancient and veteran trees are especially important for wildlife.

Along with their historical or cultural significance, our ancient trees are loved by communities because of their special appearance, the rare fungi, plants and animals they support and the stories associated with them.

The number of ancient trees in the UK is exceptional compared with elsewhere in northern Europe. So far more than 120,000 records of the nation’s favourite ancient and other notable trees have been added to a live database.

Our ancient tree data is updated by a small cohort of expert volunteer verifiers. If you'd like to get involved please get in touch or take a look at our volunteering opportunities.

Visit the Ancient Tree Inventory to find ancient trees near you. You'll be able to record one that is missing or search the database for the largest or oldest trees in any part of the UK.
