First World War Centenary Woods

One hundred years since the outbreak of the First World War, we're marking the anniversary with one of our most ambitious planting projects.

FWW sainsburys logoSince 2014, we've been working with our lead partner Sainsbury's, supported by other partners, to plant millions of native trees to commemorate the First World War.

Four flagship woods are being created in each of the UK's countries, providing a living legacy to all those affected by the conflict:

How woods and trees helped win the war

Woods and trees played an invaluable part in Britain’s war effort – from keeping our home fires burning to powering the delivery of vital supplies by our indomitable navy and propping up the network of trenches in France, timber was indispensable. Our infographic traces the history of woods and trees during the First World War (800KB, PDF).

Make thank you last forever

Those who made sacrifices in the First World War did so to secure a brighter future for the next generation. We're saying thank you by planting millions of trees in four Centenary Woods across the UK, creating beautiful life-giving places for the next generation.

Time is running out to be part of this special project

Planting is almost finished at our four Centenary Woods, and we need your help to complete the transformation of these spaces. Make a donation today and you’ll be helping us create vibrant woodland that's rich with wildlife and will serve as a poignant reminder of all those affected by the First World War.

Leave your own tribute that will stand for the next hundred years and beyond.
