What about government woodland creation grants?

Government grants are available to assist in the planting and management of some woodland creation projects. In England, for example, the English Woodland Grant Scheme is dispensed through the Forestry Commission.

The Woodland Trust is creating woodland that would otherwise not be created: we consider the carbon rights to this fully additional woodland to be ours to dispense.

We understand the concern that this might lead to allegations of “double counting” of the carbon sequestered by our trees, but seek to reassure our partners that this is not the case.

We are trading on the voluntary market, so our carbon “credits” are not part of the Compulsory Emissions Reduction (CER) scheme.

The fact that woodland creation is counted against the UK’s Kyoto commitment to no further deforestation in no way undermines the assertion that our tree planting endeavours would not take place without your funding.
