To date, all our “carbon trees” have been planted on land owned by the Woodland Trust. As such, they will remain in our care in perpetuity, in accordance with the Trust's core aims and values.
The Trust has recently moved into a phase of woodland creation on third party land. Understandably, not all landowners are prepared to commit their land to permanent woodland at the outset, but there are notable exceptions.
Examples could include former landfill sites, which have no infrastructural development potential, but could be planted to form valuable woodland habitat.
Opportunities also exist for the planting of derelict urban brownfield sites to create urban breathing spaces, and this is something that the Trust will explore in the future.
Carbon trees will only be planted on land either owned by the Woodland Trust or where the landowner has contractually agreed to the permanent creation of woodland.
