Wildlife species

Plants and animals found in woods

Woods are home to a wealth of wildlife species. Some, like the dormouse, make their home in woods all the time. Otherwise, spend only part of their time there.

When most people think of woodland wildlife, they usually think of the classic trees and bluebell scene that is a favourite with so many people.

And, indeed there is nothing wrong with this, for bluebells are wonderful plants and obviously trees are the most important feature of wood.

But, there is a lot more to woodland wildlife, if you look a little beyond this. There is a wealth of wildlife from flowers to fungi.

So, next time you are in a wood, try to see beyond the bluebells and see if you can identify some of the other less glamorous wildlife that resides there.

If you look hard enough you will find something interesting and important in the smallest and most dullest looking things.

We'll tell you a bit more about some of them in this section.
