Woods under Threat

What is the Woods under Threat team?

The Woodland Trust's Woods under Threat (WuT) team constantly works to protect ancient woods from loss or damage, in particular fighting losses to ancient woods through the planning system. Threats to ancient woods can be in many different forms ranging from roads to housing developments to leisure activities, such as paintballing.

The Trust lobbies for better protection of ancient woodland through legislation and policy. We campaign for better recording and monitoring of ancient woodland through improvement of the ancient woodland inventories. We also care for our own sites to the highest standards so they can be used as examples to other organisations. We encourage targeted woodland creation to enable buffering and expanding of existing ancient woods.

In the last decade, ancient woodland equivalent to an area the size of Birmingham has come under threat from development.  In the last ten years the team has worked on 351 cases affecting 866 individual woods. Less than 2% of the UK's ancient woodland cover remains.

If you are aware that your local ancient wood is under threat please report it via WoodWatch - where you can also find out how your community can take effective action, too.
