To help land owners and managers identify, assess and protect ancient woods and their features we have devised a simple two step process.
Both of these steps can be carried out in the field at the same time.
This approach is features-based and emphasises the importance of on site knowledge- identifying, assessing and managing ancient woodland features requires familiarity with the trees and woods in question.
While woods are the best places to start looking for ancient woodland features it can be helpful to remember that nature does not neatly categorise itself into boxes the way we often do. See our page on blurred boundaries for more information
