By sharing your knowledge of trees and woodland creation you will inspire, advise and support those interested in planting trees and creating woodland. You will use online resources to answer questions either on the telephone or by email, build relationships with your contacts, engage communities and landowners and visit their planting sites where appropriate to provide encouragement throughout their woodland creation journey.
By doing this you will support the Woodland Trust achieve its ambition of doubling the amount of woodland across the UK .
The Task
Depending on your skills and interests will depend on which of the following tasks you will be required to perform;
- Respond to emails and telephone calls from members of the public who have questions about tree planting and woodland creation. We will expect that you follow up your conversations to offer further support and gain feedback where appropriate .
- Build a rapport with your contacts and, where appropriate, visit the woodland creation sites when scheduled to complete a checklist and assist with planting design and species choice.
- Visit previously planted woodland creation sites to monitor progress, evaluate the Woodland Trust’s contribution, support the site owner in management of their new woodland and provide an ongoing link to the Trust.
- Promote woodland creation and the products and services that the Woodland Trust offers.
Timescale and Location
You will be required to attend a one day induction which will be carried out regionally, as well as at our Grantham based office.
The role itself will take a minimum of two hours a week, as well as travelling time, however we will aim to ensure you are only assigned site visits 30-40mins away from you. You will also be able to provide information, advice and support from home using your PC or by mobile.
Experience and Qualities
Experience of community development, consultation and working with others within woodland creation and / or personal experience of organising the planning, development and planting of woodland / urban trees.
To carry out this role you will need to be willing to share information about your own experiences and provide information in a supportive and encouraging manner. Good communication skills will be needed.
Equipment Required
- You will require a mobile phone for your own health and safety whilst on site visits and a landline or mobile phone will be required for taking enquiries.
- You will need access to a computer with internet to be able to respond to email enquiries and to view the website.
- To be able to answer more specific questions about woodland creation you will find it helpful to have access to the Woodland Trust’s own woodland creation website. During training we will provide you with a Q&A toolkit.
