Wales - Wentwood Forest

Wentwood Forest near Newport was acquired by the Woodland Trust in 2005. The largest surviving ancient wood in Wales, and the last remnant of the Forest of Gwent, it has a long and venerable history with records going back to the eighth century.

Alongside the exceptional fundraising appeal from supporters and the public to acquire the site, three legacies - from Mrs. Marjorie Ethel Tompson, Mrs. Joan Fielding, and Mrs. Phyllis Ella Carpenter - were vitally important in its acquisition. In addition, Mr. Doorne kindly varied his mother’s will to create a legacy in Mrs. Doorne’s memory.

To save Wentwood speed was of the essence and the ability to immediately make use of these generous legacies was key to the success of the campaign. Without them, the chance to restore the Forest may have been lost - forever.
