Southern England - Watkins Wood

Part of the Avon Valley Woods
Size:  344.84 acres (139.55 ha)
Near:  Woodleigh, Devon

Kenneth Watkins was the Woodland Trust's inspiration and pioneer, and when he died in 1996, we immediately started looking for some way to commemorate this man of vision. What more fitting and lasting tribute could there be than a wood created in his name?

By wonderful serendipity, we discovered there was a piece of land available at Wood Barton farm in Devon - right beside Avon Woods, the first hundred woodland acres acquired by the Trust in 1973. We then acquired an adjacent area of coniferous ancient woodland, Aveton Wood, just to the north of Avon Woods. It was an ideal location.

Watkins Wood itself covers 198 acres (80 ha), and together all three woods are a showcase for woodland creation and conservation; providing a unique opportunity.
An exceptionally generous legacy restricted for use in Devon from a long standing member, and a wonderful response from an appeal to supporters, have turned Watkins Wood into a reality.

We think Kenneth Watkins would approve!
