A generous and forward thinking legacy from John Larking has helped us to create a new wood at Hucking Estate in Kent. The Estate comprises some 580 acres (234 hectares) and lies within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. When we acquired the site it was a mixture of ancient and mature woodland together with arable land.
Over 150 acres of the arable land has now been planted with native broadleaf trees. The new planting links together several small isolated areas of woodland and provides a 'buffer' to help protect existing ancient woodland areas.
A plaque commemorating this thoughtful gift is on site. John Larking's legacy, and that of his close friend Hilda Cator, also helped fund the long-term management of another woodland creation site at Windmill Piece at Padbury, Buckinghamshire, where a further plaque dedicates the surrounding area to these two friends ‘who shared a love of nature’.
