On: Marital/Civil Partnerships

Q - Does a married couple/registered civil partners need two wills?
  • Both individuals need to make a will.
  • Often couples write very similar wills known as 'mirror wills'.
  • Unless specifically stated otherwise, getting married or remarried or registering a civil partnership cancels a previous will.
Q - Does my divorce/formal dissolution of my civil partnership automatically invalidate my will?

No, but marriage or re-marriage, or a new registered civil partnership will invalidate it, unless specifically stated otherwise in the will.
