Q - I want to add a legacy to my will but would prefer not to re-write the whole document. Can I simply make changes to it?
- Do not make alterations on the original document as this will invalidate it. Any change must be by codicil or a new will.
- A Codicil can alter, omit or add anything to your existing will.
- Codicils must be witnessed but the witnesses need not be the same as for the original will.
- An example of wording for leaving a pecuniary legacy is shown in our brochure ‘Are you Willing to save a wood?’ which you can either download from this site or contact us to request a copy. For residuary legacies please consult your solicitor or professional advisor as it may be necessary to draw up a new will.
