Children learn outdoors thanks to TK Maxx
TK Maxx began charging customers for core plastic carrier bags in August 2008 as part of its commitment to reducing waste. Since the policy was introduced TK Maxx has experienced a 73% reduction in plastic bag usage and saved no fewer than 27 million plastic carrier bags ending up in landfill sites.
In November 2010 the retailer announced that it would donate 1p to the Trust each time a customer refused a carrier bag. Initially the donations funded 260 free community tree packs containing 420 trees - 1 for each TK Maxx store. Each pack contains enough trees to plant an acre of new woodland which will enhance the local community for people and wildlife.
In 2011 & 2012 the donations will fund the Trust's Woodland Discovery Programme giving children across the UK the chance to learn about the environment in an outdoor classroom at a wood near their school.
Sue East from the Woodland Trust said: “Trees are vital for life - yet the simple fact is that the UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe. The generous support of TK Maxx and its customers is not only helping us plant more trees but is also educating children about the importance of trees and the environment they will grow up in."
TK Maxx is committed to helping the Woodland Trust continue to protect and restore our native woods and has supported the charity since 2004 through projects like the Christmas Card Recycling Scheme.
