The Landfill Communities Fund was created by the government to encourage and enable landfill operators to support environmental projects.
Through the scheme landfill operators receive a 90 per cent tax credit against any payment to environmental organisations such as the Woodland Trust that will fund projects that fit the criteria of the scheme. The remaining 10 per cent may be borne by the landfill operator itself, and this is often a substantial sum. As such the majority of landfill operators will not make a payment without the remaining 10 per cent being refunded to them via a third party.
This means that, in effect through this scheme your donation to the third party can be multiplied ten fold! In order to comply to the strict regulations that surround this scheme it is important that third parties involved are independent from the environmental organisation that benefits from any grants.
Penn and Tylers Green Residents Society are the Woodland Trusts third party funder.
Helping us today to create the woods of tomorrow
Grants from the Landfill Communities Fund are vital to help us successfully continue our work to protect threatened ancient woods and creating new native woodland. Projects which we hope will benefit from the Landfill Communities Fund include:
- Heartwood Forest near St Albans, Hertfordshire
- Land at Elmstead Market in Essex
- Low Burnhall in Durham
At each of these sites, we are creating new woods on a massive scale, particulary at Heartwood Forest where we hope to create the largest area of continuous native woodland in England sine the Ice Age.
These woods will provide habitats for wildlife and more green spaces for generations of people to enjoy forever. Through the donations received, we can secure a future for the UK's beautiful native woodland and the wonderful wildlife that relies on it.
If you would like more details on how the scheme works or would like your donation to be increased ten fold at no cost to yourself please email Phillipa Fisher or call 01476 581125.
