A new natural asset for the North East
We have a unique opportunity to plant 86,000 native trees as part of a new wood just two miles south of Durham. Low Burnhall will be an area for local wildlife and for people to enjoy. However, this can only be achieved with your help. Please donate to our appeal to plant a tree today.
The area which covers over 68 hectares (168 acres), runs alongside the River Wear. Tree planting will start in 2010 with local schools and community groups having the opportunity to help plant the trees that in just 12 years will be a flourishing new native wood. Visitors will also be able to experience the rare and impressive area of ancient woodland on the site which these new trees will help to protect.
In addition to planting thousands of new trees, Low Burnhall will also include a wildflower meadow, wetland, pasture land, glades, woodland rides and paths.
Our plans will only become reality with your help. We’ve raised almost £1m towards the £1.5m target but we still need your support. Can you donate £15 to help plant and care for a tree at the site?
If we can raise the rest of the funds, we will:
- Plant 86,000 native tree species such as oak, ash, birch and shrub species including hazel, elder and hawthorn
- Engage 3000 children in tree planting and environmental activities
- Provide a valuable green space close to Durham City Centre
- Extend the existing woodland corridor further south towards Sunderland Bridge
- Create new walking routes by improving access to the neighbouring land and linking with existing footpaths
- Help mitigate the effects of climate change by planting 86,000 trees
