The project to create 105 acres of new woodland at Elmstead Market has started!
Deep in the Essex countryside lies Elmstead Market, a pretty village just 6km from the market town of Colchester. On the outskirts of the village the Woodland Trust plans to transform 105 acres of land into flourishing native woodland that can be enjoyed by people and benefit wildlife forever.
The area contains many varied features with streams and ancient woodland. Ancient Woodland provides valuable habitats for wildlife. By planting new native broadleaf woodland and improving open ground habitats the site has huge potential to attract more wildlife including the timid, but charming water vole, the soaring buzzard and the silent night time visitor, the barn owl. In acquring this land, the Trust has secured its long-term future and local people can look forward to walking in a haven of tranquillity within as little as 12 years.
So far we have raised enough money to help purchase the land and started to plant the trees with 32,000 being planted in 2009 we will be starting to plant some more in 2010 and will have some community planting days.
You can still help us create this new woodland by donating to our Plant a Tree appeal. By giving just £15 to Plant a Tree your small act today will make a big impact for tomorrow and for generations to come.
