Wentwood update
We’ve had a fantastic time welcoming school and youth groups to Wentwood Forest. Over 3,500 school children have visited the site since the project first began, taking part in a range of activities, from tree planting, learning about the woodland environment, bug hunts and even making new homes for the resident elves!
This year, Wentwood has hosted 3 schools discovery weeks, involving 39 schools and 1051 pupils from across the region. The lucky youngsters have been taking part in all sorts of activities to help them learn about the woods, enjoy the outdoors and feel at home in the forest environment.
We’ve also been busily removing the conifers to allow the ancient woodland features to flourish once more. Since the project began over 203 hectares of Woodland Trust land at the site has been thinned and over 14,000 tonnes of timber removed.
We’ve also recently received an archaeology survey, which found 61 interesting features on the two areas surveyed including 41 charcoal burning platforms dating back to the 1600’s.
Work at Wentwood is continuing, with this year’s harvest underway and plans afoot to welcome more people to the forest, so many thanks to everyone who helped us to save this wonderful woodland!
