Feast on free wild food and enjoy a day out with the family during British Food Fortnight
At this time of year woods and hedgerows are bursting with seeds, nuts and berries - perfect for any wild gourmet looking for a seasonal treat.
To help inspire we have teamed up with bushcraft and foraging expert Heath Dawson to create a wild food menu to tempt you out into your local wood. From a wildwood fondue to planked trout with sorreled new potatoes and burdoch strips we have something for everyone.
Heath said: “Everyday we eat the finest foods from around the world, yet there is nothing like a wildfood forager’s diet. It gives people the chance to spend time together searching for foods and then enjoy cooking them up for a delicious dinner. They say there’s no such thing as a free dinner, but with wild foods, there is.”
When collecting wild food - remember:
- Always ask permission from landowners before foraging and keep to public rights of way.
- Know what you are picking - use reference books to identify.
- Never remove whole plants by the roots.
- Wash all plants thoroughly before eating.
To celebrate British Food Fortnight and to enjoy a taste of nature, why not find your nearest Woodland Trust wood or have a look in hedgrows, along rivers or in publically green spaces.
